This is Mary Sarli and I am the high school mathematics facilitator at Anne Frank. This year I will be working all day Tuesday and Thursday and half a day on Friday.  The instructional assistants, Jessica Gonzalez and Bertha Velasquez, will be assisting the students on assignments when I am not on campus.

The year has begun and in high school mathematics we are working on several old and new concepts.

Algebra I - We are learning about the 4 basic functions and equations that we will be using this year.  These 4 are Linear, Quadratic, Exponential, and Absolute Value.  At this time, we are not going into a lot of detail about the graphs but I wanted students to know how the graphs appear as we learn about them this year.

Geometry - The first unit this year is on Circle Relationships.  We learned a lot about circles beginning in 6th grade and used circles throughout middle school.   Now we are going to learn about additional parts of circles including arcs, sectors, segments, interior angles, central angles, chords, and other parts of circles.

Algebra II - Algebra II is going to review the 4 functions that students learned in Algebra I so we can expand on that knowledge. This unit will also work with inverses and compositions of functions and how those can be created and used.

Precalculus - The first unit on precalculus will be learning to model using functions in real life situations. There are 10 basic functions that we will be learning this year and this first unit will introduce all of them, their key attributes, and their graphs.

I hope that everyone is doing well and has not gotten washed away with all the rain San Antonio has been getting! This week Algebra I is working on Unit 3, Relations and Functions.  We will be working on vocabulary today along with learning more about relations and functions.  On Thursday, we will be learning about how to represent functions in different ways. We will be having an assignment from IXL that will be due on Friday, S.2 and S.5. This week Geometry is working on Unit 3, Surface Area and Volume.  Last Thursday we worked on finding cross sections of 3-D figures using Playdough with dental floss to cut it. We found that most 3-D figures had multiple cross sections depending on the angle of the cut.  It was very successful and the students practiced for several minutes.  Today we will be working on surface area and Thursday we will be working on volumes. Welcome to the Spring!   The spring has finally arrived and bluebonnets and other flowers are beginning to bloom, spring break is over, and now the real work begins for the rest of the year! Algebra I will be taking their Texas STAAR End of Course Exam on May 7 and Freshmen will have other tests that week also.  Algebra I is currently learning about arithmetic and geometric sequences and are learning about the differences between recursive formulas and explicit formulas. Recursive formulas can find the next term in a sequence and explicit formulas can find any term in a sequence. We will be finished with sequences next week and will have one more short unit on polynomials and factoring before we start the test review at the end of April. Geometry is currently learning about Triangle Relationships including special centers in triangles related to perpendicular bisectors, angle bisectors, medians, and altitudes. Congratulations!  The students have made it through the first semester! In Algebra I we are busy learning about Systems of Equations and Inequalities. In a system of equations, there can be 3 answers: a points where intersecting lines cross, no solution if the lines are parallel, or infinite solutions if the lines are equivalent lines. This week we have also starting talking about the STAAR Algebra I test again and how important it is since that test is the only STAAR Math Test that a student needs to graduate. In Geometry we have been learning about parallel and perpendicular lines.  Although the students learned about parallel and perpendicular lines in middle school now we are learning about Theorems and Postulates related to parallel and perpendicular lines such as ones involving angles.  For example, if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal there are several sets of congruent angles that are formed.
